October 2012

The remainder of October was jam-packed full of excitement as we celebrated my mom's birthday with dinner out, Texas Sheet Cake, a tour of the Boise Temple during the Open House, & making sure the boys got plenty of use out of their Halloween costumes which they helped to purchase from their money earned doing chores.
On the 27th Kamden joined me along with my sister-in-law Charly & a friend from church to do the Color Run 5k, which is advertised as "The Happiest 5k on the Planet".
But that's a bit misleading since Kamden was far from happy by about a quarter of the way into the race. It was a bit chilly to begin with & then his shoes started bothering him so he finished with only socks on but he didn't complain at all once the shoes were off.
Well, he didn't complain about his feet, anyway.
He kept asking how much further & not even halfway he stopped in the middle of the street & said,
"Mom, I'm DONE with this race."
But he kept on going & I am so proud of that little guy for sticking it out & completing his first 5k. Hopefully it will be a good memory for him someday & he will forget all about how cold we were & how far it seemed.
The goggles were to protect his eyes from the chalky colors but they kept fogging up.
Some random lady offered Kamden a Chic-Fil-A chicken sandwich at the starting line. He ate about half of it & then tucked the rest into the front pocket of his hoodie & finished it off after the race as we walked back to the car.
  At the finish line.
I'm not sure if I would do the Color Run again, as the advertisements were a bit misleading & the color distribution was  pretty disappointing. We achieved most of our coloring from rolling on the ground while a sparse number of volunteers attempted to toss handfuls of color onto the runners. But everyone wanted lots of color, so the spots where they threw the color were gridlocked.
But I can't complain, as I had a great teammate who kept me entertained & wasn't afraid to roll around on the pavement with me.
He was so excited to find that giant stick & only came close to whacking one other runner & potentially causing her to loose sight in one of her eyes, but we avoided any catastrophe & finished injury-free.
Then it was off to Dutch Brothers' Coffee for a memorable stop for hot chocolate in which I nearly left without our drinks, but drive-thrus can sometimes be confusing...
We also attempted family pictures at the end of October, but I have really got to be better about doing these before it gets miserably cold. The end result was 3 frustrated kids, 1 crying mother, & only about 4 or 5 shots that can actually be considered acceptable.
Here are a few of the mid-blink, mom-getting-frustrated, kids-folding-arms, everyone-watching-Owen-pull-up-his-pants photos that are the majority of our collection:

A big Thank You to my sister-in-law for helping us out with these, even though it wasn't a very fun experience for anyone involved...

We also celebrated Halloween with a Trunk-or-Treat at the church & I also helped out with Kamden's class party that day. Jeff & my mom took the boys around the neighborhood that evening where they came back with TONS of candy that has since been devoured, given away, or disposed of accordingly.
I know I took pictures of the boys together right before they left to Trick-or-Treat but right now I can't find them anywhere, so please refer to the first picture of this post where they boys are surrounding Grammy in their Marvel Super Hero costumes.
And that was the end of our October.
